Health advocates often tell us to eat your greens. This is something we’ve heard of through the years. But, where does that leave the oranges, reds, yellows, and purples?

Eat the rainbow is a simple reminder to eat the other spectrum of colors. This does not refer to M&M’s. However, it reminds us to eat more varied vegetables and fruits in order to get the vitamins and minerals that your body needs.

Aside from being a good catchphrase, there is some science behind this. The color of the food can be a good way to tell its nutritional value. By eating a variety of colors, you’re able to get as much vitamins and minerals as possible.

Red-hued produce are usually rich in antioxidants like flavonoids and carotenoids. Vegetables and plants with yellow color are caused by carotenoid zeaxanthin, beta-cryptoxanthin, and Vitamin c. Orange-colored vegetables and fruits are rich in beta-carotene, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Produce with blue, indigo, and violet colors have anthocyanins. Lastly, greens have flavonols, lutein, and beta-carotene.

Variety is Key

On another note, this quip is a reminder to eat in variety. Do not stick to a typical day of beiges, like cereal, pasta, croissants or granola. If you are a picky eater, then you might need to expand your horizon and checking out the fresh produce that’s available.

At the end of day, eating the rainbow is just one side to keeping yourself healthy. Always remember to eat a balanced meal and to watch what you’re eating.
